Conceptual Photography

Conceptual photography is one of my favorite types. Sometimes it’s easier for me to show someone how I feel or what I’m thinking than it is for me to spell it out.

Conceptual photography isn’t always clearly defined, but to me, it’s a visual representation of an idea. Sure, as the artist I have my own reasons for a conceptual piece, but viewers can choose to interpret it in other ways.

I enjoy the fact that a photo can be so versatile and evoke so many different responses. Conceptual art can plant an idea, change a mind, or make someone feel…

What do you think this photo means?

How do you feel when you see it?

“Hold it Together”

This photo’s concept is multifaceted.

When I put this photo together, I was feeling vulnerable. I was in a bad place and felt like everything was just ripping at the seams. How nice it would be if our lives could be held together by a safety pin. I want that safety and reinforcement.

Additionally, the apple is natural, and in a way, is also living. So I used the apple to represent a life, and the safety pin to represent stability and/or help.

I still have many ideas within ideas that come from looking at this photo. I guess the broadest explanation I can give is this:

When we’re feeling vulnerable and helpless, life goes on and we’re expected to just hold it together. We’re supposed to just move on like everything is okay, even when it’s not. I suppose I just wish I had something to help me hold it together when everything seems to be falling apart.

If the photo means something else to you, that’s completely okay. Take from it what you will.

Sometimes I spend an hour or more just creating and/or setting up a conceptual shoot. Much of the time, I have the idea for days, weeks, or months before I ever put it into action. I like to devote time to expressing my thoughts and creating.

These photos share a common theme. What do they mean to you?

“In the Balance”

I created the photo above called “In the Balance” with the idea that amidst all the hate and chaos that surrounds us, love is kind of hanging in the balance and holding the world together.

I used tumbling tower blocks because when you remove certain blocks and do not take great care, there is a risk of the other blocks falling down. If you were to remove the “LOVE” block, the whole tower could fall. This creates a metaphor for what could happen if the balance is disturbed, OR what can happen to hate if love conquers.

Speaking of which… How do you feel about this photo?

“Love Conquers”

I’d like to think love will save us all. It sounds cheesy, I know. But come on… You can’t tell me we all don’t think about world peace once in awhile.

Basically, I just wanted to show love in a triumphant position. The rest is up to you.

And here is a variation of the last photo…

“Love Conquers II”

It’s quite similar, but I feel it’s a bit lighter in nature than the last. I think love should stand out.

If you’re still not sure what conceptual art is, try a search on the web. I’ve seen many different definitions, but I have my own ideas about the genre. You have to decide what it means to you!

I’d love to know what you think about my photos. Feel free to leave a comment or ask a question.

  1. wow- very good idea! It makes sense and I think it is so creative that you did it out of Jenga pieces.
